Hello guys, here’s another update to my Blog… This time I have my Dragon Flightcycle ready!
It took me some time to make this, as I had to re-do this animation for 3 classes and still fix some stuff on the 4th class…

I had some more stuff to do to make it even better like adding more to the tail… I’m just exhausted to look at this animation, I’m moving on…

Next time I’ll make an Acting with this dragon, I’ll post stuff here as I have them :)

Ae galera, finalmente eu “terminei” meu Ciclo de Voô do Dragãozão… Ele demorou mais do que deveria, tive que refazer umas 3 ou 4 vezes, mas eu to feliz com o resultado final, achei que ficou bem legal apesar de ainda ter como melhorar el ainda mais adicionando mais animações no rabo e orelha… Mas é isso aí… Chega desse monstro maldito.

So, we meet again, no one!

This time around we had to animate a Dragon Jumping :)

I had to watch this a bunch o times to get the timing and the poses, but I exaggerated a little on the timing, making it really quick :)

Tive que assistir esse video varias vezes pra pegar o timing e as poses, mas eu acabei exagerando em ambos, tornando a animacao bem mais rapida :)

Work in Progress – Dragon Walk and Runcycles

Hey guys, what’s up?

Well, I’ve been studying a lot these days… We had to animate a “Dragon” (which in truth is a cat with a dragon’s face and a bats wings) walking in a “Walkcycle” and after that we had to develop him Walking through maya’s scene…

Here’s a video of that Work in Progress:

I still need to animate its tail, its wings and add some microdetails to make him more alive, but the main body movement is there almost finished for everyone to check. I may do a Making of of this animation…

My biggest difficulty was adjusting the dragon steps as it walks in a pre-determined path.

The process goes as this (as stated by my Gnomon Teacher):

1) First you have to begin with a step that was named “Chess Piece” by the teacher and it consist you guy grabbing the main controller and moving the animal through the space where you want him to move by the end of the animation and setting a key for the main positions.

You’ll end up with something like this:

2) Now that the dragon is flying through the scene and following the path that you laid for him you must start making the contact poses focusing JUST ON THE HIPS AND BACK LEGS. That’s REALLY important, you need to focus first on one part of your character then on the next one so you can have a much better sense of what’s moving. Remember that movement is action and reaction, if the movement is starting on the hips, the shoulders will just react to what the hips are doing, so you better start laying down poses where the movement begins.

Your poses on the back legs should look like this:

But you must be asking: How do I know where to put the legs? (First of all put the animal in the contact position on frame 1) Well, if your animal is following the path you chose it’s rig will “inform” you where to place the legs. That’s because while the rig is moving it’s legs will stay in place because of the IK, so when a leg stretches and the rig breaks you know that that leg needs to move and be placed in front of the character, thus making a contact position. You need to repeat this every time you outstretch a leg until you the end of the animation

3) Now it’s time to make the Passing Positions. The passing positions occur when the animal has it’s legs parallel to each other, so in that pose (which may not occur exactly in the middle of your contact positions) you frame it and put its legs in a position kinda like this:

As you can see only the back legs have a nice pose, the front legs don’t, that front leg contact pose is not actually a contact, that’s a correction that was made by my teacher. But after remaking it and done it right you will never have your character with the back legs and front legs at the same time on almost the same place during a walk.

Those are some tips for when you’re making a walkcycle.

And that’s about it for this post, I may elaborate a little more on the Runcycle if I have the time, but we’ll have to wait and see :)

Hi “People”,

By “People” I really mean “Nobody” as my page views are smaller than a cold Japanese penis.

Well, since my last post many things have happened: I’ve moved to the United States to study at Gnomon, I’ve broken up with my girlfriend (hint hint for the girls out there), etc, etc… But what everyone and 1cdd’s director really want to know is: WHERE ARE 1CDD’S ANIMATION YOU LAZY ASS?!

It’s with much pleasure that I announce for the happiness of all (and of Thiago’s Girello) that THEY ARE BEING PRODUCED! CHEERS!

Ok, ok, Pics or GTFO? I have some here…

First some problems that I went through in the process of creating the girl’s Idle (click on the picture to enhance!):

As you can see on my first picture her pose is really dumb, it’s all straight and isn’t really dynamic and most important of all: It didn’t show any kind of weight, where was her weight being thrown? Basically what I did there you should avoid ALWAYS, unless it’s a really dumb super-hero pose like those:

Look how silly that looks? Everything is so symmetrical… But let’s not be negative because those poses actually works almost exclusively with super-heroes because it’s symmetrical, it inspires perfection and gives a sense of “justice” and superiority of the character that’s doing it, but even DC nowadays try avoiding that… You’ll actually never see a villain doing that pose

What I needed was something a little more girly, a normal pose where you could feel the weight of the character and make her a bit more sexy, so to illustrate what I mean here goes a random hot Wonder Woman on a pose that I found cool:

Her end result got to be:

See how her action line is much more dynamic and interesting? That’s really important, be it for game or movies animation your action line must ALWAYS be dynamic so you can keep the viewer interested. The fact is that in game animation this action line must work from ALL ANGLES, what makes (in my opinion) game animation much harder than traditional render animation, not that the quality of one is better than the other, but it’s just that for Render animation you have to strike good poses for a camera but in Game Animation your camera almost always turns 360 degrees or your character does, so you have to really be carefull when animating for a game.

Now one last image i’d like to share: The girl dying pose :)

Some of you may be asking yourselves: WTF about her arm? Well my friends, that’s my reference!
Her dying pose is actually a Family Guy reference, they use this arm behind their back anytime someone dies or falls from somewhere and I’d really liked the idea of injecting some kind of reference that I really liked in the game, and the end result wasn’t that bad :)

Peeps!

For those who thought (hey dad!) that I was just here in the US to play Skyrim and DOTA 2 all day long… Ain’t that cute? BUT THAT’S WROOOOONG! ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOX9lDf-6go )

I have been watching Gnomon Master Classes… THEY ROCK! And helping my friend Thiago Girello (@thiagogirello) in the world’s second best project after DeMagnete: 1 Carnival of Distortions (1cdd from now on)

For those who don’t know 1cdd: www.1cdd.com.br go there because I’m not explaining anything here…

Well, the part that I’m working on right now is the main character’s Facial Rig: THE GIRL! (yeah, that’s right… Thiago oozes so much criativity that he didn’t gave a name to her, or she has one and he didn’t tell me… dunno, i’m always finding new things about this project lol) Probably the fact that she doesn’t have a name must be something profound, maybe the game directors wants you to relate to that girl and feel what she feels… Yeah, probably not.

Well! Here are some pictures of how things are for now! (I’d say that her mouth is complete, now on to the top of her head! Brows and Lashes!)

Bom, a parte do Projeto que eu to trabalhando agora é o Rig Facial da personagem principal do jogo: A MENINA! (isso, o thiago exala criatividade o suficiente pra não ter nomeado a menina, ou ela tem nome e ele não me contou… sei lá, eu to sempre descobrindo alguma coisa nova no projeto uhahuahuauahauahu) Provavelmente ela não ter nome é algo mais profundo que isso, talvez o diretor do jogo queira fazer você se relacionar com a menina e sentir o sofrimento da personagem… Provavelmente não, ele deve ter esquecido…

Bom! Segue fotos de como estão ficando as coisas! (Eu diria que a boca está completa, falta agora a parte de cima! Cilhos e Sombrancelhas!)

2nd Place at SB Games Event! – 2o Lugar na SB Games!

Hello to all!

This month of november was the month that SB Games happened at Salvador, one of the biggest Game Deveoper-centric events of Latin America.

During this event the Independent Games Festival takes place and it chooses the best 3 Indie Games from Brazil (only the ones that were signed up for it, of course). There were 55 Games competing for the prize and I’m extremely proud to say that we took 2nd place home!

Our Price:

(It says Second Place, PC without Finance Category, Technical Jury, SBGames 2011, Independent Games Festival.)

We can use this simbol to show everyone our feat! :)

I’d like to thank the whole team that made this game not only the best Graduation Project our university – Anhembi Morumbi – has ever seen but a winner of festivals world around! hehehehe

SB Games e Vídeo de Demonstração!

Oi gente!

Bom, esses dias eu recebi um e-mail do Thiago Girello do 1cdd (www.1cdd.com.br e @thiagogirello) falando que ia ter um concurso de Jogos Indie na Brasil Game Show (Maior festival de Games da America Latina e que acontece na minha cidadezinha do Rio de Janeiro) valendo DUAS passagens com TUDO PAGO pra GDC (Game Developers Conference em São Francisco). Adivinhem o que eu fiz?

Comecei a preparar o DeMagnete. Mas tinha um problema: Bug das caixas atravessarem a parede! Isso não podia ter, isso quebra o jogo! O pior é que eu já tinha passado 1 ano inteiro de desenvolvimento do Magnete enchendo o saco do nosso programador pra ele resolver esse bug, e ele n resolvia… Depois de convencer ele (falei que se a gente ganhasse ele ia pra São Francisco comigo) ele resolveu o bug em literalmente 20 MINUTOS! (Maldito sejam todos os programadores do mundo).

Mas ai eu me lembrei: E a SBGames? Eu sabia que ia acontecer ela no fim do ano mas achava que as inscrições pro concurso de Indie Games dela já tinha acabado, fui checar no site e adivinha? As inscrições terminam hoje (dia 07/08/11) às 11:59, descobri isso na quarta-feira (dia 03/08/11) e de lá pra cá foi uma correria só procurando trocar as músicas do jogo pois temos que ter direito ou permissão de uso de todas as musicas e assets, o que já temos de tudo menos da trilha sonora. Vocês não sabem como é difícil achar músicas free que cabem no seu jogo pelas internets… No final das contas achamos 5 musiquinhas legais e colocamos ela no DeMagnete, mas tivemos que renderizar mais uma vez os creditos do jogo porque precisávamos colocar os autores e as músicas lá. Além disso eu precisei criar um vídeo de 3 minutos explicando um pouco sobre como o jogo é, suas principais características e tal…

Bom, depois de muita correria eu fico feliz em avisar que conseguimos nos inscrever pra SBGames! E vamos passar essa semana terminando a inscrição pra Brasil Game Show!

Meu Demoreel 2011

Olá, de novo,

Faz tempo que eu não posto nessa joça… Perdi meu login E senha hehehehe… Fora que andei fazendo TCC, então não tive tempo nem de jogar alguma coisa fora o DeMagnete…

Bom! Terminei meu primeiro Demoreel com algumas animações que vão desde quando eu tava fazendo melies (as 3 primeiras) até as minhas últimas (as do guerreiro), não curto todas as animações que eu fiz e eu quero subtituir essas, mas enquanto não posso colocar os trabalhos que andei fazendo na Loopix eu vou curtindo essas animações antigas…

Mas enfim, TA PRONTO! E foi graças ao Thiago Girello (@thiagogirello) e ao amigo Gabriel Camelo (@camelo003) que me ajudaram a montar a idéia de um reel com uma musica legal e a renderizar com qualidade descente :P

Então é nozes, assistam ai, falem o que vocês acham uma bosta, tanto na parte de edição quanto nas próprias animações!
